Makar Sankranti is a major Indian Festival which is celebrated on 14th or 15th January, denoting the moving of Sun in the Makar Rashi. It is celebrated by donating various things like Khichdi, Gajjak, Oil, and money to the needy, and a Maha Snan is also held on this day in the holy Ganges.

It is celebrated in different parts in India with different names and customs. In Tamil Nadu its called Thai Pongal, In Assam its called Bihu, in Gujarat and Rajasthan it is called Uttarayan and is famous for flying kites, so much so that it is also called "The Kite Festival.
