Caring Enough to Confront - Homosexuality in Light of Scripture, Part 1
There is a lot of confusion inside the church about how to address homosexuality. Is it still wrong today? Or should Christianity relax its stance on this issue to be more loving? In this program, guest teacher Pastor Tim Lundy provides an in-depth look at what the Bible says about same-sex relationships. Learn where this issue of homosexuality stands under the light of Scripture.Main Points 7 Places in Scripture where homosexuality is mentioned: Rescue of Lot from Sodom and Gomorrah. -Genesis 19Levite and his concubine. -Judges 19Leviticus 18:22Leviticus 20:13 Understanding the Law today (Moral – Civil – Ceremonial)Romans 1:26-271 Corinthians 6:9-111 Timothy 1:8-11 Summary from the passages: Sexual intimacy between same-sex partners is condemned in the direct passages of Scripture.Sexual intimacy between same-sex partners is never portrayed in a positivelight in the Bible. There is no Biblical warrantfor same-sex marriage. If homosexuality is not permitted biblically, then why are some people attracted to the same sex? Christian and secular experts continue to grapple with the issue of causality. The impact of the fall cannot be underestimated in the ways it has shaped humanity. -Romans 5:12 Is it sinful to have same-sex desires? God never tempts us – It always comes from the world, the flesh, and the devil.Jesus was tempted as we are, so temptationis not sin. -Hebrews 4:15When we allow our desire to cross the line to thoughts or actions contrary to God’s design, we have sinned. -James 1:13-15 How have Christians with same-sex desires chosen to live out their faith? Celibacy: A choice of devotion to Christ. Marriage (Heterosexual): A choice of self-denial for Christ.Kinship Partnerships: Nonsexual intimacy with others.Transformation: Nothing is impossible with God. How should we respond as a church? We can love all people knowing that it is not our responsibility to judge them. -1 Corinthians 5:9-10, 12In the context of relationship, ask: “May I introduce you to Jesus?”We must continue to speak the truth in love to those in the church, calling all of us to the sexual standards of Scripture. We must support and celebrateour brothers and sisters in Christ who struggle with same-sex attraction, but are choosing to pattern their lives according to Scripture. We must develop a more robust understanding and celebration of single adults in the church. We must open our homes and families to those who are longing for community and were promised it in the church. Caring Enough to Confront - The Church and the Environment, Part 2
We all know from Genesis 1 that God created the world and called all He made good. But not many of us remember that God also put human beings in charge of caring for creation. In this program, Chip continues challenging how Christians should think about the environment. Learn why Scripture proves God cares about our world and why we should, too!Main Points The Question: How are followers of Christ to think, act, and respond to the controversial issue of the environment? Examining the Scripture: What does God say about the environment? The earth belongs to God. -Psalm 24:1-2 | Implication: We are to honor God’s creation. -Genesis 1:1God appointed mankind “dominion” over the earth. -Psalm 115:16 | Implication: We are the earth’s vice regents. -Genesis 1:28, 2:15The earth/nature has intrinsic value and reflects the character and beauty of the Creator. -Psalm 19:1-2 | Implication: We must explore not exploit; enjoy not worship the earth. -Romans 1:19-21Mankind is placed in the middle of the created hierarchy and is uniquely responsible to God (above) and for the animals, plants and resources (below). -Psalm 8:3-8 | Implication: We are to use not abuse animals, plants, and resources to glorify God.God commands environmental stewardship to protect the land, animals, and vegetation for the common good. -Leviticus 25:1-12, 23; Deuteronomy 25:4; 20:19-20; Matthew 6:26 | Implication: Consumption and productivity must be governed by the boundaries of conservation.Christ’s redemptive work includes the earth. -Romans 8:19-21 | Implication: We must treat the earth with the same priority God does. -Revelation 21:1-4 Where do we go from here? Is global warming true? Is the Earth our sacred Mother? Are human beings responsible for “messing up” the world? In this program, Chip considers these questions from a biblical perspective. Caring Enough to Confront - Culture Shock 4.0
Are you concerned about your community and church as values and morality continue to shift away from the truth of Scripture? In this program, Chip begins a critical series to help Christians use the light of God’s Word to confront today’s most critical issues, without being combative or defensive. Learn why our call to be salt and light is needed now more than ever.Main Points Personal Story of Confrontation: Chip recounts a pivotal moment in his family's life when his mother intervened with his alcoholic father. Her decisive action—giving him an ultimatum—led to his sobriety and eventual transformation. This personal story underscores the importance of confronting issues with care and clarity.Call to Action for Christians: Chip highlights a contemporary issue where many Christians remain silent on controversial topics out of fear or a desire to avoid conflict. The message is clear: Christians need to be more vocal and courageous in addressing critical issues like politics, climate change, and LGBTQ+ matters, rather than remaining passive.Historical Context and Church Role: Reflecting on past experiences in a progressive city and the impact of the book Culture Shock, Chip emphasizes the importance of understanding and communicating truth in a respectful manner. Chip advocates for addressing controversial issues with both grace and truth, grounded in biblical principles. The Importance of Light Over Heat: Chip argues that Christians should bring light, not heat, to conversations about divisive issues. This means presenting truth with compassion and respect, rather than judgment or condemnation.Need for Internal Reflection: Before addressing external issues, Christians must first examine and address their own shortcomings and hypocrisies. Chip stresses that judgment begins with the house of God and that Christians should live out their faith authentically.Emphasis on Jesus’ Teachings: Drawing on biblical teachings, particularly from the Sermon on the Mount, Chip urges Christians to stand firm in righteousness, even if it leads to persecution. He stresses that the goal is not to be right for the sake of being right but to embody and communicate Jesus’ teachings faithfully.Practical Application: Chip calls for a practical approach to addressing critical issues—engaging in compassionate dialogue, supporting those in need, and actively working towards solutions rather than merely criticizing from the sidelines.Final Encouragement: The message concludes with a call to action for Christians to embody the light of Christ in their interactions and to not shy away from confronting issues with love and integrity. The goal is to reflect Jesus' love and truth in all aspects of life, making a positive impact on the world.
