Christopher Allen was trying to make it as a war reporter when, aged just 26, he was shot and killed on the frontline in South Sudan. But as news of his death began to spread, suspicion grew. Some claimed he was really there as a mercenary, a fighter. Others said he was a reckless freelancer, in over his head. And there was another question: was he killed on purpose, or was this another accident of war? From Tortoise and the team behind Sweet Bobby, Pig Iron is a dark adventure in war and journalism – and into what really happened to Christopher Allen.

The Pig Iron podcast tells the story of slain war reporter Christopher Allen. Did someone want him dead? Was his killing an accident? Did the man know too much? Tortoise editor Basia Cummings attempts to answer these questions in this seven-episode series.
Tortoise is more than a news outlet. Instead of sharing the news as it happens, it reports on the "why" behind each event. It aims to understand what is happening in the world. In her role at Tortoise, Basia exposes the power gap that oppresses communities and nations today. She believes in the power of storytelling to promote justice. Before she joined Tortoise, she worked at HuffPost and The Guardian. The Pig Iron podcast continues her work.
Christopher's 2017 death, the subject of the podcast, is still a mystery. He was a freelance journalist. The reporter died from gunshot wounds while near the Ugandan border. He'd been hiding among rebel forces. Evidence suggests that the killers and their associates committed war crimes. They even staged Christopher's body like a trophy. Thanks to the efforts of Reporters Without Borders, the Republic of South Sudan formed an investigation committee in 2023.
The first episode attempts to piece together what Christopher was doing in Sudan. The next podcast episode shifts to when he went to Ukraine on a break from school. He was 22. It was then that Christopher got his first taste of the frontlines. He seemed thrilled and horrified at once. The journalist's fascination led him to the Middle East. Did something happen in Ukraine that changed his fate?
Podcast listeners hear disturbing details suggesting Christopher's death was not accidental. Basia and a team travel to the crime scene and meet with the writer of a revealing essay. By episode five, Basia is in Nairobi, meeting with the secretive author. Does he know who killed Christopher and why? Why did some people call him the "white rebel?”
As Christopher's family continues to seek justice, Basia searches for answers. Both the UK and the US are fighting for the cause. Will justice prevail? Listeners can hear the entire Pig Iron podcast series today.
