Our Editor's Take

The Classic Tales Podcast is a narrated collection of stories people want to read but can't find time to. B.J. Harrison is the acclaimed narrator who reads horror, humor, mystery, and fantasy with equal mastery. He makes literature easy to consume while commuting or tasking. Harrison narrates diverse genres. He includes A.A. Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh and Agatha Christie's The Million Dollar Bond Robbery. Edgar Allen Poe's works and F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby are here, too.

The host grew up a slow reader. At school, Harrison had difficulty concentrating and had to re-read paragraphs. That changed when Harrison found audiobooks. He would listen to them as a set painter and fabricator. After two decades, he decided to try narration. Harrison imitated accents from a young age, and he is multilingual. His podcast combines those skills with his desire to help reluctant readers. Harrison hopes listeners find his readings easy to comprehend.

Harrison's favorite author is Charles Dickens. In one episode of The Classic Tales Podcast, he reads The Signal Man. It's about a train worker who sees an apparition three times. Each time, the ghost warns of impending danger. Listeners hear the unexpected outcome after the third warning. Dickens survived a train crash before writing this. His train car stayed on the tracks while those behind it fell off a bridge. It haunted him forever.

D. H. Lawrence's Tickets, Please is another title featured on the podcast. The author experienced censorship for content considered too sexual for his time. Tickets, Please is about a womanizing man. He wants to be a "nocturnal presence" in women's lives, not an "all-around individual." The women get tired of him "sunning himself in the presence of so many damsels." They retaliate. It's a thought-provoking story about life before #MeToo.

The Classic Tales Podcast may satisfy listeners who like drama. There's also plenty to smile about. Harrison reads works by humorist P.G. Wodehouse and children's author Beatrix Potter. He shares interesting facts about authors and plots. Harrison's most significant contribution is his enthusiasm for literature. New episodes premiere Fridays.

Published in 1867, A Journey to the Center of the Earth explores the “Lost Civilization” genre of fiction which was just becoming popular at the time. Conan Doyle also had a nice showing of the genre in The Lost World.  The combination of a young, reluctant and somewhat sarcastic narrator, and the bombastic professor/explorer is common in the genre, fun to read, and fun to perform. I hope you like it.  And now, A Journey to the Center of the Earth, Part 1 of 9, by Jules Verne.  Follow this link to get Classic Tales for Children, Volume 1, including Pollyanna, Winnie-the-Pooh, The Wind in the Willows, and Alice in Wonderland.   Follow this link to become a monthly supporter:   Follow this link to subscribe to our YouTube Channel:    Follow this link to subscribe to the Arsène Lupin Podcast:   Follow this link to follow us on Instagram:   Follow this link to follow us on Facebook:   Follow this link to follow us on TikTok:

Can a movie be better than the story it’s based on? Let’s take a journey from short story to Academy Award Nominated film, today on The Classic Tales Podcast. Welcome to The Classic Tales Podcast. It includes the new recording of Pollyanna, bundled together with Winnie-the-Pooh, The Wind in the Willows, and Alice in Wonderland. I thought of titles that would really go well together, so I pulled out all the stops. This anthology is perfect to listen to again and again. You can pick it up at classictalesaudiobooks.com by following the link in the show notes.  https://store.classictalesaudiobooks.com/classic-tales-for-children-volume-1-p366.aspx Ok, off the top of your head, what movies are better than the books they are based on? Whenever I consider this, I tend to come back to The Wizard of Oz and Ben-Hur. I think in these two instances especially, they expanded on the original material beautifully, to fit the medium of film. It’s a transformative process, to move from story told only in print, to a story told by actors, artists, costumers, directors, set designers, stunt people, special effects artists, and all the other hundreds of people it takes to make a motion picture. I recently discovered I’m going to have to add the film Meet John Doe to my list.  Meet John Doe is a film released in 1941, directed by Frank Capra. It stars Gary Cooper, Barbara Stanwyk and Edward Arnold. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Story, and it was ranked No. 49 in the American Film Institutes 100 years, 100 cheers list. It entered the public domain in 1969, and you can watch it for free many places on the internet, also on Amazon Prime. The film is based on the story “A Reputation”, by Richard Connell. Connell also wrote “A Friend of Napoleon” that we’ve heard recently, and is most famous for his short story, “The Most Dangerous Game”.  So first, let’s hear the story “A Reputation”, and then look at what elements were modified and expanded on to create the acclaimed motion picture, Meet John Doe. Just a heads up – this story deals with suicide. And now, “A Reputation”, by Richard Connell.
