Welcome to the Culture Catalyst, a fortnightly podcast with me, Stephanie Bown, a high-performance coach. Since I was 14, I've been obsessed with positive psychology and human behaviour, which has led me on an insightful professional journey, partnering with some of Australia's leading entrepreneurs, CEOs and boards and international clients across Europe and North America. I am deeply curious about the capacity of humans to come together in small groups and make a difference by exploring the bonds that tie and the moments that break. read less

Chapter 24: Where strategy often goes wrong
There are three main reasons why organisations fail to extract full value from their strategy creation to strategy execution process: We fail to align on a single source of the truth. We don’t place enough emphasis on strategy execution. We get lost in translation. Strategy creation is not a passive delegation process. It is an active participation process that happens at every level in an organisation in order to breed success for every individual. What to expect in this episode: (06:40): Why your strategy might be failing. (10:06): Is your strategy getting lost in translation? (12:00): How to prevent losing sight of the purpose when there’s so much focus on goals and measures of success. Chapter 23: Evaluate and review
Fostering a culture of openness and transparency means regularly evaluating and reviewing performance.  People leaders provide clarity and alignment by setting goals and KPIs during performance reviews and Team Plan workshops. These are revisited in regular forums to evaluate progress, celebrate wins and reflect on lessons learned along the way. Regular evaluation and review forums create context, meaning and connection to your company’s purpose, values and vision. They create a cadence around which all work activities revolve and help teams remain not just accountable, but motivated, because they are times when we actively observe progress and experience a sense of achievement. What to expect in this episode: (07:35): How to effectively evaluate and review performance. (10:11): What can happen at an annual leave if there’s criticism? Chapter 22: Cascade and align
A well-defined and succinct one-page Business Plan without a process to translate that plan into action is just a good read.  The senior or executive team sets strategic goals, targets and priorities, but teams and individuals should have a large degree of autonomy over how that work is delivered.  The Business Plan is cascaded to a Team Plan and My Plan via Team Plan workshops and annual performance reviews. What to expect in this episode: (02:16): Transform your business plan into an action plan. (08:34): What a good quarterly team planning checkpoint looks like. Chapter 20: Your Business Plan – a strategy on a page
Like birds flying in formation, a one-page Business Plan enables your people to efficiently and effectively migrate from where you are now to where you need to be. It translates your vision into clear and measurable action. Having a highly engaged, positive culture filled with smart, capable people is not enough. To harness your team’s collective potential, you must have a single source of truth: the base from which all other activities cascade. Chapter 18: The value of strategy
26-02-2024
Chapter 18: The value of strategy
At its most basic level, a strategy is a plan for realising a vision.  But plans are limited – we can only form them based on the experiences and inputs we have at the time. The more information and experience we gain, the better our plans become.  Plans are simply ideas that get you moving on a path towards your vision; action is where you learn the true nature of the game. Plans must be put to the test; and the quicker they can be tested, the more people learn, and the more effective their strategy creation process becomes. What to expect in this episode: (02:51): Transform your strategy into a sports game. (08:35): How to create alignment in your business using the strategy ladder. Chapter 16: The Culture Plan
15-01-2024
Chapter 16: The Culture Plan
The Culture Plan is an organisational asset that demonstrates, at a glance, how your company honours its values in how it deals with employees at each stage of the employee lifecycle. It's only fair that if employees are expected to perform at their best and uphold the company's values, the business should also act by those values when interacting with them. It's mutual respect and accountability, like a dance where both partners lead gracefully. The Culture Plan operationalises your Culture System (your espoused purpose, values and behaviours), enabling leaders to honour values with the subsequent structures, processes and incentives that drive high performance. What to expect in this episode: (04:11): You only have one chance to make a first impression. (07:26): Make your culture plan measurable. (11:44): how to make your culture plan accountable. Chapter 15: Defining company values and behaviours
01-01-2024
Chapter 15: Defining company values and behaviours
If your purpose describes why you exist, how you are unique, and what you do, your values capture how you behave in the pursuit of your company mission. Values provide an essential moral compass to your business. They define what is important; what is of ‘value’ or considered valuable. Here’s the trick though. Values can’t be seen. We learn from each other what our values are by observing and experiencing the behaviours, attitudes, responses and practices that naturally arise during our interactions with people. The behaviours you see are the indicators of the values held within. Therefore, for people to be meaningfully held accountable to a set of values or ethical standards, the behaviours that exemplify your values must be defined. What to expect in this episode: (02:10): Use this Mt Everest analogy when looking to make your next hire. (05:22): 3 ways you can fundamentally bring a value system into your organisation. Chapter 12: The power of culture

Chapter 12: The power of culture
Culture drives engagement and ignites passion for your purpose. High-performance companies prioritise culture by putting their people first, and building their businesses around talent. Research shows that a healthy, constructive workplace culture is essential for employee engagement and business success. An outstanding product and strategy won't compensate for a toxic, disengaging workplace environment. What to expect in this episode: (03:16): How culture is measured against 12 different styles of thinking and behaviour. (06:56): Three business cases on why your organisation needs to invest in culture. (18:51): How SoGood is the #1 alternative milk brand because of how they recruit culture. Chapter 11: Where leaders often go wrong
By fully embracing The Leadership System, leaders arm themselves with the tools to avoid the common traps that other leaders fall into. I’ve observed these pitfalls and even experienced them myself through the hundreds of hours coaching CEOs, executives and team leaders on how to get the best from their teams. The way I see it, there are four common pitfalls where leaders work against themselves. What to expect in this episode: (01:44): Start addressing underperformance off the bat. (06:20): Give attention to your best people. (09:16): Strategic plans without implementation are a waste of time. Chapter 8: Using feedback to boost performance + Q&A
11-09-2023
Chapter 8: Using feedback to boost performance + Q&A
Feedback is essential to performance. Without it, we are flying blind. We’ve all heard the saying that ‘no news is good news’, but when it comes to inspiring high performance, it’s just not true. In high-performance cultures and high-performing teams, leaders adopt a constant and daily habit of asking for and giving feedback, reinforcing the behaviours of their people that add value and bring us closer to meeting set standards. What to expect in this episode: (02:42) The actual reason people shy away from receiving feedback (04:38): Excerpt from chapter 8 of Steph’s book, ‘Purpose, Passion and Performance’ (14:13): This speed-dating trick will encourage staff to ask for feedback To download the full audiobook, ‘Purpose, Passion and Performance’, get your copy here - https://tinyurl.com/2d2krd8y  If you want Steph to answer your question in an upcoming Q&A episode, DM Steph or use this form - https://forms.gle/BFDxwyem9zZXCbih8  For all other resources: 🎙️ Podcast resources - https://stephaniebown.com/podcast/  📢 Book Steph to speak - https://stephaniebown.com/conference-speaker/  🖊️ Sign up to my free eLearning event “Transform Culture” on August 16 - https://stephaniebown.com/events/  🎵 Music by Slip.stream - Alleyoop | Take It On | I’M Holding On 📱 Follow Steph on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephaniebown1/  Greatly appreciated if you could leave a review or rating on your favourite podcast platform. Chapter 7: The importance of clear standards
28-08-2023
Chapter 7: The importance of clear standards
Setting standards is about being clear on the outcomes for performance; but not being prescriptive about how to get there. It’s about pointing the direction you want people to go; but letting the navigate their own path. This can at first seem paradoxical.  How can you exert control as a leader over an outcome without controlling the way that outcome is achieved? What to expect in this episode: (03:31): Excerpt from chapter 7 of the book, ‘Purpose, Passion and Performance’ (06:54): This one mind trick will make you spot opportunities in your goal and standard setting (08:41): 3 key tips on setting standards To download the full audiobook, ‘Purpose, Passion and Performance’, get your copy here - https://tinyurl.com/2d2krd8y  If you want Steph to answer your question in an upcoming Q&A episode, DM Steph or use this form - https://forms.gle/BFDxwyem9zZXCbih8  For all other resources: 🎙️ Podcast resources - https://stephaniebown.com/podcast/  📢 Book Steph to speak - https://stephaniebown.com/conference-speaker/  🖊️ Sign up to my free eLearning event “Transform Culture” on August 16 - https://stephaniebown.com/events/  📚 What I’m reading this week: “Start with Why” by Simon Sinek - https://shorturl.at/bpBN4  🎵 Music by Slip.stream - Alleyoop | Take It On | I’M Holding On 📱 Follow Steph on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephaniebown1/  Greatly appreciated if you could leave a review or rating on your favourite podcast platform.
