Our Editor's Take

Former pro basketball star Jalen Rose announced his podcast, Jalen Rose: Renaissance Man, in 2020. He was adamant about one thing right away: no topic would be taboo for the show. And he wasn't kidding. Soon he would be "Getting Fresh," as he named the pod's first episode, with Cedric the Entertainer. Rick Ross would teach him to "Appreciate Your Position While Plotting Your Promotion." And Gabrielle Union would help him understand that "Success Is a Recipe."

In fact, every Jalen Rose: Renaissance Man podcast title sports an uplifting or thought-provoking theme. Listeners don't have to be basketball fans to enjoy the show. Rose's topics are universal. Rose begins each episode with a bit of a pep talk covering a concept he cares about. Example: "Make It up as You Go" starts off with Rose stressing the importance of flexibility in life.

Then each podcast episode closes with "Last Call," when Rose sums up what struck him most during that day's chat. In his interview with Wayne Brady, for instance, they talked about the Will Smith Oscars slap. And Rose's closing moral of the story was, be sure to "see previously vilified people through a new lens."

Rose came into his own as a master of many forms of media after his playing days. He became an ever-outspoken commentator for ESPN and ABC. He won mainstay status on popular broadcasts such as NBA Countdown and Get Up! Jalen also got his own multi-platform talk show to cohost, Jalen & Jacoby.

He was a fine player in his day, as well. Rose's name is going down in college hoops history, in particular—right next to four others. Juwan Howard, Ray Jackson, Jimmy King, and Chris Webber. They were the ballyhooed "Fab Five" back in their college days at the University of Michigan. Then Rose went on to play for 13 years in the NBA, most notably with the Indiana Pacers. With Jalen Rose: Renaissance Man, the host continues his record of success.
