Our Editor's Take

For years, JJ Redick was one of the most dominant basketball players in the world. The Old Man and the Three with JJ Redick and Tommy Alter gives Redick a different role—podcast host.

The Old Man and the Three with JJ Redick and Tommy Alter discusses various topics. It talks about politics and current events, but this is, first and foremost, a basketball podcast. As those who follow basketball know, Redick is a compelling choice to cohost an NBA podcast.

He began his basketball career in high school, where he would be an All-American player. His success at the high school level would lead him to play for Duke, one of the most elite collegiate teams in the US. During his time at Duke, Redick would become one of the most storied players in Blue Devils history. In fact, Reddick is one of only a handful of collegiate players to have their number retired. He remains one of the most decorated players in college basketball history.

Redick would then spend an impressive 15 years in the NBA. Most of that time would be with the Orlando Magic, the team that drafted him. In September of 2021, Redick announced his retirement from the league.

The Old Man and the Three with JJ Redick and Tommy Alter allows Redick to offer his unique insight. As a former player, many of his thoughts on the current state of the league are insightful. He also has good chemistry with cohost Alter. The hosts also sometimes conduct interviews. These can be with athletes, politicians, or people in the media. Past guests include Stephen Curry, Joakim Noah, and Desmond Bane.

The Old Man and the Three with JJ Redick and Tommy Alter premieres new episodes on Mondays.

Sue Bird and Cam Johnson | The Current Climate of the NBA, WNBA, and College Basketball
This week on the Young Man and the Three we welcome Brooklyn Nets forward Cam Johnson and the legendary Sue Bird to have an in-depth discussion about the current states of the NBA, WNBA, and college basketball. First, Tommy Alter and Jason Gallagher intro the episode with some takes and updates. Sue and Cam then discuss how star players in the NBA and generated differently than stars in the WNBA (Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese), how options like Overtime Elite and G League Ignite have affected the men’s game, and the differences between men’s and women’s college basketball. Then, they break down everything surrounding NBA and WNBA television ratings and if they even matter at all. Cam and Sue also both get very candid about what it’s like playing for rebuilding teams, being in trade talks, and Dennis Schroder’s trade to the Golden State Warriors. They also discuss the new NBA all-star game format. Lastly, they have an honest convo about the three-point shooting boom, if teams are truly taking too many threes, if teams are copying the Boston Celtics or if it’s actually the best way to win games, and how current NBA play compares to past NBA generations and Olympic play. This is truly one of our best episodes.
