Joel Dommett, smoky fish tacos and a peach paloma
Today
Joel Dommett, smoky fish tacos and a peach paloma
Comedian and broadcaster Joel Dommett grew up on a farm in Gloucestershire but, with no interest in getting his hands dirty, he set off for the bright lights of London. He is blessed with funny bones and, after some challenging years on MTV News, he set his sights on stand-up comedy. A stint in the Jungle in 2016 secured his big break and he returned the following year as the host of I'm a Celebrity... Extra Camp. These days Joel Dommett is prime time, presenting The Masked Singer and the National Television Awards. He is married to Hannah and, as well as hosting a podcast together, they are parents to baby Wilde. Joel is here to talk about the new series of his ITV game show In with a Shout. Joel arrives early for dinner, so Nick gets busy mixing one of his favourite cocktails, a peach paloma and the pair tuck into some pea guacamole and chips, a recipe from Honey & Co. Joel loves Mexican food, so Angela prepares some tasty smoky fish tacos. The experts at Waitrose pair the meal with a No.1 Astrolabe Awatere Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. Joel is very excited to be seated at the Dish table and kicks off conversation with some hilarious tales of his experience in the labour ward. He talks about the time he had to film some awkward scenes with Sienna Miller and shares the questionable topping he used to put on his pizza. Martin Freeman and Tony Schumacher, the best bolognese and a negroni
The actor and writer join Nick and Angela to talk about the new series of The Responder. Martin Freeman is a man of many genres and he has mastered most of them in his 27 year career. We first fell in love with him as Tim in The Office in 2001; he gained cult status as Dr Watson in Sherlock in 2010; and then hit the big time as Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit in 2012. Martin won a Bafta and an Emmy for Sherlock and last year scooped an International Emmy for his portrayal of Chris Carson in The Responder. Tony Schumacher spent 12 years as a policeman in Liverpool before a period of poor mental health forced him to take stock. While on the road to healing, Tony tried his hand at stand-up comedy and, encouraged by his wife, decided to pursue his dream of becoming an author. Tony has written three novels and penned his critically-acclaimed BBC drama with Martin Freeman in mind. Nick welcomes our guests with a negroni while Angela prepares the best bolognese by Martha Collison, a dish specially requested by Martin. Marian Keyes, carrot tarte tatin and purple sprouting broccoli
Marian Keyes is one of the most successful Irish novelists of all time. She has written more than 20 books and sold over 35 million copies worldwide. Marian studied law in Dublin to placate her parents but had no interest in pursuing a legal career. Instead her rebellious nature took her to the UK where she lived in a squat in East London. It never occurred to Marian that she might be a writer until one day when she was inspired to write a short story. Her first novel, Watermelon, was published in Ireland in 1995 and was an overnight success. Marian’s books are as charming and chatty as she. Her latest novel, My Favourite Mistake, is out now. Angela prepares a showstopping carrot tarte tatin which Marian adores and the experts at Waitrose pair the dish with a Loved and Found Susumaniello Rosato Organic Puglia Rosé. As the proudest Irish woman out there, Marian kicks off conversation with talk of the motherland, she speaks candidly about her unconventional route to becoming an author and Nick and Angela challenge her to a round of the oven glove quiz. Kaya’s latest role is in Guy Ritchie’s hit series The Gentlemen on Netflix, playing Susie Glass alongside an all-star cast of Theo James, Vinnie Jones and Ray Winstone. Nick welcomes Kaya with a Whiskey Sour inspired by her latest role, while Angela makes her carb-loving dreams come true with a pesto & three-cheese hedgehog garlic bread to start and fresh tagliatelle with buttery cavolo nero, anchovies and pangrattato for the main course. To follow, a malbec rosé from Argentina goes perfectly with Highmoor, a washed rind cheese from Oxfordshire. Helen pours a red from South Africa, Reyneke Organic Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot, which Nick and Angela try with a Godminster organic vintage cheddar. And finally, Helen recommends a sweet wine, Carte Or Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise NV, which she pairs with the No.1 Colston Bassett Stilton. Having enjoyed their cheese and wine tasting, Nick and Angela tuck into some of your questions: stay tuned for their TV snack choices, their most memorable meal with their partners and what they most admire about each other. Maggie Aderin-Pocock, spiced lamb & plum tagine and prosecco
Nick and Angela welcome a professional stargazer to Dish HQ. Dr. Maggie Aderin-Pocock MBE is a renowned space and science educator and a prominent figure in the field of astronomy. She began watching the skies from her council flat in North London as a child and went on to study physics and mechanical engineering at Imperial College London. It is Maggie’s ambition to go to space one day and last year she was named a ‘Barbie Role Model’ for her work promoting science careers to girls. She became the co-host of the BBC’s The Sky at Night in 2007 succeeding Sir Patrick Moore. Her new book The Art of Stargazing is out now. Maggie is a big fan of bubbles so Nick kicks off proceedings with a bottle of the award-winning Waitrose Blueprint Prosecco DOC while Angela prepares Martha Collison’s delicious spiced lamb & plum tagine with a side of couscous. This conversation will take you to the moon and back, literally! Maggie talks about life on other planets, growing food on Mars and how her allergies to brazil nuts and dairy affect her life. Miriam Margolyes, sage and rosemary chicken stew and mash potato
Nick and Angela welcome their most anticipated guest so far to Dish HQ. Miriam Margolyes OBE is renowned for her acting career spanning over five decades, but it is her inimitable sense of humour that has earned her a special place in the hearts of audiences worldwide. Miriam was the voice of the Cadbury’s caramel bunny in 1990, won a BAFTA for her role in The Age of Innocence in 1994 and portrayed Professor Sprout in the Harry Potter franchise. Her autobiography, This Much is True, sold three million copies and her new book, Oh Miriam! Stories from an Extraordinary Life is out now. Though not a cook, Miriam absolutely loves food and tucks into Angela’s delicious sage and rosemary chicken stew with mash potato, followed by a tarte tatin, with gusto. This episode is a hilarious glimpse into the incredible life of Miriam Margolyes. She discusses her Vogue cover shoot, why she lives with housemates rather than her partner and what it was like having dinner in Sandringham.
